Study on Absolute Calibration Coefficient Improvement for ALOS PALSAR Data after Initial Calibration Check

چکیده
The Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS) was launched in 2006, carrying the Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (PALSAR). Although three years have passed from the start of ALOS PALSAR observation, we know the PALSAR is in operation with greatly stability operation. However, we need to monitor its performance for the future sustainable operation in order to evaluate the temporal sensitivity variations of the PALSAR sensor and keep the calibration coefficient quality and its improvement. To achieve this goal, AIST (National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology) kicked off the PALSAR calibration and validation campaign in 2007. We especially focus on cross-polarization calibration and aim to propose an improved backscattering coefficient by evaluating the absolute calibration coefficient accuracy is evaluated, which is calculated for each polarization based on the groundtruth. In the calibration observations, we used two triangular trihedral corner reflectors (CRs) of size 2 m and 3 m for the like-polarization and our inbuilt prototype rotatable rectangular dihedral CR was used for the cross-polarization.

Initial Polarimetric Calibration of PALSAR
This paper discusses an initial polarimetric calibration of ALOS PALSAR. ALOS was launched on January 24, 2006. PALSAR, which is one of ALOS three sensors, is the first spaceborne L−band polarimetric synthetic aperture radar. It is expected that PALSAR polarimetric data is used for many applications such as agriculture, forestry, ocean, natural disasters etc. Thus, polarimetric calibration is a...
متن کاملFrozen Ground Monitoring Using Palsar/alos Data
Microwave remote sensing has shown proof of its effectiveness for frozen ground mapping due to the high difference of permittivity between frozen and unfrozen soil. However, the characterization of seasonal frozen ground still remains a problematic application. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) launched the Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS) on the 24 of January 2006. This sat...
متن کاملFirst Assessment of Polarimetric Images from Alos - Palsar: Check of Polarimetric Calibration and Assessment of Land - Cover Classification Potential
This study is a first assessment of fully polarimetric SAR data from the Advanced Land Observation Satellite (ALOS) – Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (PALSAR) over the test-site of Oberpfaffenhofen in Germany. The polarimetric calibration is checked by using corner reflectors on the Oberpfaffenhofen test-site. Further, the fully polarimetric images are classified by using the ...
متن کاملPolarimetric calibration and validation for ALOS/PALSAR
The objectives of my proposal are to calibrate and validate the polarimetric data acquired by ALOS (Advanced land observing satellite)/PALSAR (Phased array type L-band synthetic aperture radar). In this report, we show the polarimetric calibration parameter of PALSAR derived by Quegan method and Amazon data. Moreover, we confirm the accuracy of Faraday rotation angle derived from PALSAR data as...
متن کاملCal/Val Results and Accuracy Assessment Plan for PRISM and AVNIR-2 Onboard ALOS
This paper introduces the updated results of calibration for optical instruments of the Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS, nicknamed “Daichi”), was successfully launched on January 24th, 2006, and it continuously working very well. ALOS has three mission instruments; an L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar called PALSAR, and two optical sensors called PRISM and AVNIR-2. PRISM stands for the Pa...
